Animals Sheltered Due to Black Forest Fire: June 13

Hundreds of animals are currently in shelters due to Black Forest Fire.  The numbers below are still changing throughout the day, however, this is the latest report.

Large Animal Shelters have more than 800 receiving assistance.

  • Iron Horse Open Space:  40 horses
  •  State Fairgrounds, Pueblo:  0 animals
  • Arapahoe Fairgrounds:  0 animals
  • Penrose Center:
    • 100 horses
    • 32 goats
    • 22 chickens
    • 1 pheasant

Small Animal shelters have 366 receiving assistance.

Please note that many equines and other small livestock have been placed with private individuals who have offered their homes for emergency animal sheltering.  These numbers are not included in our shelter counts.  Our estimate is that approximately 400 evacuated horses/small livestock may be in the private homes.
